Why Your Body Needs Water Every Day

Introduction

Did you know you can survive weeks without food but only days without water? Water is

essential for your health and survival. Water has many roles in our bodies, like protecting our

organs, assisting in digestion, and maintaining overall health.

Benefits of staying hydrated

  • Staying hydrated helps children think better and concentrate on their fun and learning activities.

  • Drinking water aids in digestion, helps our bodies break down food, and absorbs nutrients.

  • Water also helps keep muscles and joints in good shape.

  • Protects children from germs and viruses.

  • It prevents headaches from dehydration.

  • Water carries oxygen and nutrients to cells.

How much water do children need?

The amount of water that a child needs every day varies depending on their age, weight, and sex. Weather conditions, activity level, and a child’s overall health affect daily water requirements as well.

The American Academy of Pediatrics makes the following recommendations for daily water intake:

1 to 4 cups a day for children 1 to 3 years old

1.5 to 5 cups a day for children 4 to 8 years old

5 to 8 cups a day for children 8 years old and older

Tips to encourage children to stay hydrated

  • Be a role model by making it a point to drink water with your kids.

  • Use colorful water bottles or cups.

  • Set reminders or make a water challenge game.

  • Carry around a portable water bottle to always have water on hand.

  • Add slices of fresh fruit like lemon, cucumber, berries, mint, or small amounts of 100% juice to water for flavor to make water more appealing.

  • Offer foods with high water content, like fruits and vegetables, at snack and meal times.

Final thoughts

Drinking water every day is simple but powerful. Staying hydrated is essential for healthy minds and bodies. The water we drink regulates body temperature, keeps muscles and joints moving, moves waste out of the body, and aids in digestion. Keep a bottle handy, drink often, and enjoy feeling energetic, focused, and strong!
